KP Acoustics in conversation with William Gottelier, Architecture for London
At KP Acoustics Group, we have had the pleasure of working alongside some incredible businesses over the years – each making bold moves across their industries with a fascinating story to tell. To capture these innovations and insights, we’re offering a window into the inspiring stories, businesses and careers of our many industry friends to provide helpful insight and advice on the market that is useful for everyone.
William Gottelier trained as an Architect at London Metropolitan University and Kingston University and has worked for a number of award-winning practices with experience across a variety of scales and sectors. Now a Senior Architect at Architecture for London, he works consistently to curate complex interventions within existing buildings, new build residential developments and one-off private homes.
Architecture for London combines a team of award-winning architects, engineers and design specialists with a passion for creating sustainable buildings that truly stand the test of time. KP Acoustics Group has been fortunate to partner with Architecture for London on a wide portfolio of projects, working with clients at the earliest stage to provide expert advice and consultancy. Joining forces with Architecture for London on a residential project on Thorney Hedge Road, the KP team undertook an environmental noise survey at the site allowing the assessment of day-time and night-time levels likely to be experienced by the proposed development. Here, resultant glazing specifications ensured that noise-sensitive spaces within the development would be suitably protected from external noise intrusion to allow for resting and sleeping within homes of architectural excellence.
To take a step into life at Architecture for London, William kindly took five minutes to share an insight into his role, the common problems the business solves for clients and what is on the horizon within the architecture industry.
1. Can you tell us about your background?
William: We are award-winning architects based in London and are dedicated to the creation of inspirational architecture and interiors, with a focus on sustainability. We create healthy buildings with natural, breathable materials and achieve the highest Passivhaus and EnerPHit standards to maximise sustainability and comfort. From new homes, house extensions, residential refurbishments and commercial buildings, our projects run at all scales.
We believe that our unique turn-key approach combining design, engineering and construction services ensures that each project meets the exacting requirements of our clients. Whilst we are architect-led, our team offers specialist structural engineering, planning, landscape, interior design and construction skills that provide a holistic design and build service, remove risk and instil confidence.
2. What do you love most about what you do?
William: Our team enjoy the challenge of working within constrained briefs. Whether this be the renovation of listed buildings or creating seamless additions to heritage homes, we strive to create spaces that bring joy to our clients.
3. What problems does your business solve?
William: We find solutions to the critical questions facing the city today: how can we build net-zero carbon housing in London?
Our team of specialist craftspeople work toward the most stringent Passivhaus low-energy design principles, meaning that we consistently strive to reduce a building’s ecological footprint for our clients. This allows us to deliver practical, sustainable homes that are healthy, warm and comfortable throughout the year.
4. What do you see as the biggest trend for your industry this year?
William: As a result of the UK net zero target by 2050, we see more and more clients following retrofit first principles, modernising and optimising existing spaces for their needs.
For us, environmental impact has always been a key consideration in our work. Taking a research-based, fabric-first approach to sustainability allows us to carefully consider the embodied energy of materials and the performance of our buildings in use.
