Acoustics Research

Chris has worked in both the audio and acoustics industries. With an extensive track record as an academic, he holds an MSc and a PhD from the University of York and has managed multiple research projects and contract research. He was Professor of Acoustics at Solent University from 2016 to 2021 and is still an external supervisor at the University of York.

He has recently undertaken projects in spatial audio and virtual reality (VR) for the remote diagnosis of engineering problems. These have included the non-destructive testing of railway wheelsets, the development of hearing screening, and haptic technology which assists visually impaired people to navigate public spaces such as shopping centres. Combined with his interest in the use of audio in gaming, he’s also an experienced recording engineer and sound designer.

Chris also sits on the Council of the Institute of Acoustics, for which he is the Chair of the Education and Learning working group, the committee of the IOA southern branch, a UK executive of the Audio Engineering society from 2015-2019, and chair of the AES South of England group from 2016 to 2020.

Juan has more than 20 years' experience in acoustics consultancy, teaching, training and research. He has held positions in the public and private sectors as an acoustics consultant, researcher at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, and Senior Lecturer at Solent University. He holds MSc degrees in Physics from the University of Salamanca and in Sound and Vibration Research from Southampton University.

Juan's research experience includes advanced acoustic measurement techniques for the aerospace sector – carrying out contract research sponsored by the European Union in collaboration with Airbus, DLR, NASA, QinetiQ and Rolls-Royce. He has also carried out consultancy work in all aspects of building and environmental acoustics, noise and vibration testing of medical equipment, automotive parts and acoustics instrumentation.

He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Audio Engineering Society and the Institute of Acoustics, where he currently sits on its Education Committee.
Juan leads our technical training programme, as well as commercial projects such as product testing and certification.
