Monitoring services

Construction dust, outdoor air quality and indoor environments

Construction dust monitoring

Monitor airborne particulate concentrations around demolition, earthworks, construction and vehicle activity. We agree suitable positions and criteria around nearby receptors, the work programme and relevant project requirements.

Coverage can be reviewed as activities move across the site or the risk profile changes.

PM10 & PM2.5 monitoring

Measure particulate concentrations using equipment selected for the application. Where MCERTS-certified monitoring is specified, we confirm the appropriate instrument and the certification scope for the required particulate fraction.

We agree measurement periods, data review and reporting around the intended use of the results.

Gas & VOC monitoring

Monitor selected gases and volatile organic compounds where these are relevant to the site or investigation. We review the substances of interest, expected conditions and required measurement performance before specifying equipment.

Gas and VOC monitoring is scoped to the application, with the capabilities and limitations of the selected method explained.

Indoor air quality monitoring

Build a clearer picture of conditions in offices, commercial spaces and other occupied buildings. Monitoring can include carbon dioxide, particulate matter, selected VOCs, temperature and relative humidity.

The scope is agreed around building use, occupancy, ventilation questions and the concerns being investigated.

Requirements & investigations

Monitoring with a clear purpose

Our team takes the time to understand why you need air quality information, so the assessment and monitoring address your project’s requirements and the decisions you need to make.

Planning & local authority requirements

Review planning conditions, dust management plans and monitoring specifications. We help define the assessment needed and agree relevant pollutants, positions, criteria and reporting arrangements for your site.

Demolition & construction works

Establish monitoring before the relevant activities where required, then follow conditions during the works. Use the record to help investigate events and review dust-control measures.

Complaints & neighbouring concerns

Scope targeted monitoring to investigate reported air quality concerns. We consider event timing, nearby activities and the wider setting when reviewing the available evidence.

Building management & indoor conditions

Understand how measured conditions change with occupancy, building operation and ventilation. Agree the parameters and review needed to support your facilities team’s investigation.

Measurements that matter

Choose the right parameters for the question

Different pollutants and monitoring methods answer different questions. We confirm what the proposed equipment measures and how the results should be used.

PM10 & PM2.5

Airborne particulate measurements selected around the project specification, monitoring objectives and required equipment performance.

Selected gases

Gas monitoring specified for the substances and conditions relevant to your brief, with measurement range, sensitivity and method agreed before deployment.

Volatile organic compounds

VOC monitoring selected around the investigation. We explain whether the proposed method provides a broader indicator or information about particular compounds.

CO₂ & indoor conditions

Carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity monitoring to support the review of occupied spaces, alongside other parameters where appropriate.

Weather & site context

Where useful, weather information and site activity records can support the interpretation of outdoor monitoring events and changes over time.

Assessment & monitoring

Connect your air quality assessment with site monitoring

An assessment helps define potential impacts and the controls required. Monitoring provides a record of measured conditions at the agreed locations. Our team can provide either service or coordinate both around your project.

Air quality assessments

Discuss the assessment required for your planning submission, development or investigation. We agree the scope around the project, local setting and information needed by the relevant stakeholders.

Monitoring & management

Translate the relevant assessment findings and project requirements into monitoring positions, measurement methods, reporting and response arrangements during the works.

Send any existing air quality assessment, planning conditions or dust management plan with your enquiry so we can respond to the required scope.

Online access & reporting

Keep your team informed as conditions change

KPM Monitoring provides secure online access to received readings, with configured alerts and reporting to help your team follow conditions and investigate events.

Review your monitoring data

View the parameters and time periods relevant to your site, with access arranged for the people who need to use the record.

Configure email & SMS alerts

Agree trigger criteria and recipients so notifications reach the people responsible for investigating and reviewing site controls.

Choose your reporting

Agree weekly, monthly or project-specific reporting, with professional data review and interpretation included at the level your project needs.

Measurement frequency and data transmission are different settings. Online updates and notification timing depend on equipment configuration and connectivity. We confirm these arrangements during scoping.

Our approach

Expert support from planning to ongoing review

Understand your needs

Our expert team reviews your site, activities, programme and relevant documents. We discuss the potential impacts, sensitive locations and questions your assessment or monitoring needs to address.

Agree the scope

Confirm the assessment requirements and any monitoring equipment, positions, measurement settings, criteria, reporting and responsibilities. Review access, power and communications before installation.

Deliver the agreed service

Complete the assessment and reporting within the agreed scope. Where monitoring is required, install and commission the equipment, establish platform access and configure the notification arrangements.

Maintain, review & adapt

For ongoing monitoring, service the equipment, manage calibration and performance-check requirements, and provide the agreed data review and reporting. Adapt coverage as site needs and risk profiles change.

People & practical arrangements

A service that fits your project

Practical questions

Air quality assessment & monitoring FAQs

Can you provide an air quality assessment for a planning application?

Yes. Share the site details, development proposals and any requirements from the local authority. Our team will review the information and agree an assessment scope suited to the application and its setting.

Which pollutants should my site monitor?

That depends on the activities, nearby sensitive locations and project requirements. We review your brief and any relevant assessments or conditions before recommending particulate, gas or indoor air quality measurements.

Can you provide MCERTS-certified dust monitoring equipment?

Yes. Where MCERTS-certified equipment is required, we confirm a suitable instrument and its certification scope for the proposed application. The required particulate fraction, measurement method and project specification are checked during scoping.

Do we need baseline air quality monitoring?

Where an existing-condition record is required, allow time to monitor before the relevant works begin. The duration, pollutants and locations are agreed around the project requirements and purpose of the record.

How many dust monitors will we need?

There is no single number suitable for every site. We consider the layout, work phases, nearby receptors, likely emission sources and any specified positions before agreeing the monitoring coverage.

How are alert thresholds agreed?

We review the project documents, monitoring objectives, pollutants and measurement periods. Alert settings should reflect the agreed requirements and response arrangements for your site.

What happens when an alert is received?

The responsible team investigates the event, reviews the activities taking place and follows the agreed response procedure. Monitoring results can be considered alongside weather and activity records, with specialist review provided where included in your scope.

Does a dust alert prove our site caused the event?

No. A recorded increase needs to be reviewed in context. Other sources, weather conditions, nearby activities and readings from other positions may be relevant when investigating the cause.

Is monitoring the same as an air quality assessment?

No. An assessment considers the potential impacts and requirements of a project, while monitoring records measured conditions at specified locations. Depending on your brief, you may need either service or a coordinated combination of both.

Can you monitor air quality inside buildings?

Yes. We can scope indoor monitoring for parameters such as CO₂, particulate matter, selected VOCs, temperature and relative humidity. Tell us about the building, occupancy and concerns so we can recommend appropriate measurements.

Will air quality monitoring guarantee compliance?

Monitoring provides evidence to support management decisions. Meeting project requirements also depends on the activities, controls, responsibilities and response to the findings.

Am I tied into a fixed-term monitoring contract?

No. Monitoring is provided on a rolling weekly rate, so you can use the service for as long or as short a period as you need. We work with you to adjust coverage, extend the service or arrange removal when monitoring is no longer required.
